The Therapies · CranioSacral

One of the most elegant forms of bodywork — because it trusts the body to heal itself.

A gentle, hands-on therapy that releases the small adhesions holding the body out of balance, and lets it find its own way back.

Read

In CranioSacral Therapy we release the small adhesions in the connective tissue along the spine, hips and head — and that releases the body’s own ability to repair itself, and to come back into balance.

It is effective for a wide range of problems associated with pain and dysfunction, because it works through the connective tissue — the fascia — where most pain originates. Seems too good to be true? That’s exactly the right question. The mechanism is simple once you can see it, and I explain it plainly in how it works.

The premise

The body wants to heal itself. Sometimes it just needs a tug in the right direction.

The touch is light. You stay fully clothed, lying face-up on the table, and most people find it deeply relaxing.

Common questions

A few things people ask.

What conditions benefit from CranioSacral Therapy?

It can help a great many things, but most of the people I see are living with some kind of pain:

  • Back & neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Headaches & migraines
  • Sinus pain
  • Concussion & post-concussion
  • TMJ pain
  • Hip, knee & foot pain
  • Sciatica
  • Scoliosis
  • Lupus & fibromyalgia
  • Chronic autoimmune & inflammatory pain
Who created it?

CranioSacral Therapy has been used within Osteopathy for over a hundred years, with roots in the bone-setting traditions of Europe and of Native American healers. The school I practice was developed by the osteopathic physician John E. Upledger, following his research from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he was a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics.

Does it hurt?

No. The touch is light — you stay fully clothed, lying face-up on the table, and most people find it deeply relaxing. The changes are usually felt a day or two later, as the body integrates the work.

It’s the only hour that I completely let go and let myself be healed — both on a physical and emotional level.
