The Therapies · Visceral Manipulation

Ease the organs, and the body lets go of pain it was holding elsewhere.

Gentle work through the fascia around the organs — often the key to pain that seems to come out of nowhere.

Visceral Manipulation works through the connective tissue to ease abnormal tension in the organs — and the pain that tension can refer elsewhere.

Developed by osteopaths, Visceral Manipulation addresses the fascia around the organs. When those tissues tighten, they can affect how an organ functions and create pain and dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system. Because the organs are attached to structures like the spine and the diaphragm, that tension can surface in unexpected places — pain in the right shoulder can come from the liver; pain in the left shoulder, from the stomach. By releasing the connective tissue around the organ, we relieve the pain in the shoulder. Sounds wild, but it works.

Paired with CranioSacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation is a wonderful tool for figuring out how to relieve pain that seems to come out of nowhere. If you’re curious why any of this works, read my note on how it works.

Why it works

Pain rarely stays where it starts. Follow the fascia, and it makes sense.

Pain that comes from nowhere?

Let’s trace it back.

If you’ve got pain that no one can quite explain, this work — often blended with CranioSacral Therapy — is a good place to start.
